After IU, Millie (Meade) and I moved to Boston and became bank tellers. Then I was a VISTA volunteer with the Legal Assistance Foundation of Chicago. Following that, a Masters in American Studies from Purdue.
I became a lawyer and began working for the Federal Labor Relations Authority, a small agency that enforces labor laws and mediates disputes between unions and management. I have worked there for 25+ years and am now the Director of the Chicago Office. Detours included 9 years at home with my kids and 3 years as a judge for the Illinois Human Rights Commission. In 1982, I married Martin Barr (labor lawyer) and we had three sons---Jeremy (labor lawyer-33), Nick (Chicago Public School teacher-30), and Andrew (computer guy-27). About 3 years ago, we moved back to the City of Chicago after 23 years in Flossmoor, IL. We live in an old graystone, walk everywhere, and enjoy wonderful restaurants, theater and concerts. Living very close to Lake Michigan, a perfect evening is a sunset at the lakefront with picnic and wine. And best of all, the sons are a short uber ride away. Darlene (Tennell) and I enjoy long talks several times a year. I saw Millie (Meade) 10+ years ago at her surf shop in Stinson Beach, CA.but she seems to have fallen off the face of the earth of late. My mom celebrates her 90th this summer but my dad died (Parkinsons)at 91 about a year and a half ago. Carole (Wright) and I plan to drive to WL on the 24th as long as her Chicago daughter does not go into labor early. I am very much looking forward to seeing old friends and would not miss this reunion for the world. |
