Dr. Edward Neuwelt is a professor of Neurosurgery and Neurology at Oregon Health & Science University. He is the director of the Blood-Brain Barrier and Neuro-Oncology Program, and has over 35 years of experience treating patients with brain tumors. Including a busy clinical practice, he also devotes much of his time to preclinical and translational studies of brain tumor therapy, chemoprotection, and improved imaging of the brain. He has published over 250 journal articles and is the author of several books and book chapters.

In addition to his clinical practice and research, he is the director of several outreach programs that serve the local community. Since the early 1980’s he has been the sponsoring physician of the ThinkFirst program, a program that aims to reduce brain and spinal cord injuries in adolescents. Dr. Neuwelt also founded a program for high school students that provides the opportunity for local high school students to learn the scientific method and work on a research project with a mentor who is a physician or scientist. In recent years, Dr. Neuwelt has created a partnership with Ponce Medical School in Ponce, Puerto Rico to bring medical students to Oregon to participate in clinical and research rotations. Both the high school science class and the Puerto Rican exchange program are part of Dr. Neuwelt’s larger goal of creating a translational research training pipeline that spans from high school to medical and graduate school and beyond.

He lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife of 42 years. He enjoys travelling to Denver, Colorado, Dallas, Texas and Vienna, Austria to visit his three children and three grandchildren.
