Posted 4/7/16 50 Years in a Nutshell: I graduated from Ball State in 1970 (where I majored in parties and boys); started as a Kindergarten teacher in a small town in South Carolina as part of a federal education program through the University of Georgia. I worked at UGA in Athens in this program for 7 years with my Dad, providing teacher training for communities using our program, which involved travelling to six communities as diverse as Pocatello, ID, Lee County, VA (Appalachian) and Gulfport, MS. I earned a Master of Arts degree at UGA in 1977; graduated with a doctorate in educational administration from the University of Virginia, where I met my husband Tom Mays. We married in 1982 (he kept his surname and I kept mine). Together, we have had varied careers and owned businesses. We lived in Cumberland, MD for 14 years (I was an administrator at a non-profit and later, owned a gift store; Tom managed a car dealership), New Brunswick, Canada for 3 years (taught young adults in academic and job skills, including on Big Cove Indian Reserve) and Port St. Joe, FL for 13 years, where we owned a real estate firm and then worked together as real estate appraisers in our own company. This was during the real estate "boom" - I appraised so many condos at Panama City Beach, I was called the "Condo Queen!" We moved to the beautiful mountains of Clifton Forge, VA in 2007 and are now retired. I am active in a variety of community activities. We love white Boxers: Our current spoiled "daughter" is five year old Tricksy! Thank you Bill and Barb for the web site! I have enjoyed catching up on the news as updates are posted. |
